JRI Seniors Do Very Well in a Difficult College Acceptance Year

It's no secret that 2014 was a very difficult year when it came to college admissions. Admissions rates were down in most of the selective schools across the country. While it is still unclear as to just what caused these low college acceptance rates, one factor that surely lowered domestic admissions is the skyrocketing number of students applying to schools. Stanford University reported the lowest admissions rate – 5% – and most other selective schools had lower admissions rates than in previous years.

At JRI, the effect was definitely felt with JRI students gaining admissions to schools at slightly lower rates than in some prior years. Despite the fact that several of the students were still in the midst of writing their first paper, the outcome for students was great. As always, some of the admissions decisions were confusing. When the dust cleared, however, the JRI Class of 2014 was poised to begin work in some excellent schools. The schools that JRI students will be attending in the fall are (in full)

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

California Institute of Technology

Pomona College

University of California, Berkeley (Regents' and Chancellor's Scholarship)

University of California, Berkeley (Regents' and Chancellor's Scholarship)

University of Southern California (Trustee Scholarship)

New York University

New York University

Cornell University

Syracuse University

(Repetitions indicate multiple students.)

In addition to this, one JRI Summer Student gained early admissions to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she will be attending next year.

Of special note are the three students who earned scholarships to UC Berkeley and USC. These are extremely competitive scholarships providing significant financial support. Moreover, these students have access to research opportunities, priority registration, special mentoring, and more. This truly represents an outstanding opportunity.

We wish our students the best as they move forward in their lives! We are pleased to have been able to help them get their careers started. We know that in the coming years, the positive impact of work done at JRI will continue to accelerate their careers.
