Corporate Research Groups____________________________

JRI provides support for Corporate Partners by creating research groups designed to investigate a specific area of science or specific engineering problem. Such joint ventures benefit both groups of people, providing interesting research projects to JRI researchers and students, and allowing projects to be investigated at a significantly smaller price than would be required by many other groups, such as universities or other research institutes.

Companies involved in such joint ventures retain ownership of all technologies developed as part of the joint venture. Companies entering such ventures are expected to provide funding for the research project including tuition for the student research teams, any necessary funding for Research Fellows, and any specialized equipment. However, this funding is typically significantly less than that provided in an alternative institution. As an example, $40,000 will typically provide funding for a single graduate student for a year at a university, whereas it will support a team of 13 students at JRI for a year. This gives JRI the ability to leverage the capabilities and collaboration of a large team of students and Research Fellows, with a significant savings in terms of the required input.
